The battle continues with Dani killing the second to last spider, leaving the one closest to the Taxi to rip the door off the hinges and attempt to climb in. Tesla stands up, no longer pouting, and quick draws her multi puprose gun (wonder) while adjusting some dials and pulls the trigger causing a jet of flame to shoot out. Still unaccustomed to the weapon, she squeezes the trigger a little to soon and it scorches the pavement and slips from her fingers but she catches it having done no damage to the spider. Mason dodges the spiders pincers by moving back and dropping the seat down to lie prone momentarily. Dani swings her sword up in an arc after her previous slash cut the other spider in half, but misses. Tesla successfully uses the gun a second time lighting the spider on fire causing it to react out of sheer panic it tries to cram itself further into the cab to get away from whatever caused the fire. A wildly swinging limb delivers minor bashing damage to mason who has shoved himself against the driver side door. Tesla races around to open the cab and let mason out while Dani climbs on top of the roof to survey the scene as the racket of the car alarms still going off attracted the attention of more than just the spiders. As Mason tumbles out of the cab, thanks to tesla opening the door, three massive wolves emerge from the maze of vehicles. The Wolves rise up, standing easily on their hind legs and howl. Mason quickly yells “run!” and as they all turn to run across the street into a nearby convenience store “Stuff and Things” Dani studies the wolves noting that, while they appear to be werewolves, the don’t have any traits that would indicate that they are suffering from the typical lycan malady or are any of the forms of garrou. The wolves, while massive and can easily stand back on their hind legs, resemble more of a twisted version of a regular wolf. The snout sprouts oversize teeth, the eyes are red and the hair that covers the body is oily and mottled. The claws coming out of their paws look incredibly sharp and long and the entire body is packed with almost a disproportionate amount of muscles, adding a disgusting unnatural look to the overall image.
As Dani leaps down from the cab roof she scoops up Tesla in one arm, sword in the other as Tesla howls back at the wolves. Running through the front entrance of the store, Tesla (who’s facing back behind dani) sprays the entrance inside with vegetable oil, as the party continues to run through the abandoned aisles and into the back. Entering the back room the come upon the lone worker of “stuff and things” who’s back is turned to them, standing perfectly still, in the path between the stock aisles leading to the back exit. Mason gentle shoves the woman forward again crying out that everyone should run and indicating terrible things are coming. As the group scoots past, the woman stumbles forward a bit and it’s noted that she stands in a puddle of ichor and, after coming to a stop from the light push, creates another as the open mouth vomits out a sudden stream of yellow, blackened bile. The eyes of the woman glow a sickly yellow behind her closed eyelids. The newly laid ichor immediately begins to bubble and expand upward as soon as it hits the floor. As it takes a moment to weave around the aisles to get to the entrance the party is able to witness as the substance continues to grow and rise creating a roughly humanoid shape. The goo sloughs off and stepping forward in pursuit of the team is a tall, evil looking clown holding a massive hammer (like those seen during the test of strength booths at Fairs).
The group quickly exits but not before hearing the front door of the store smash open and the sudden sound of yips and whimpering followed by a sudden crashing noise as the wolves slip and slide in the vegetable oil left by Tesla.
Shift to Marshal
Putting his rifle away, Marshal reloads his six shooter while walking towards the pile of ichor. Squatting down he draws his knife and examines the puddle, lifting a sample with the blade. Wiping it off he walks around the corner to explore the alley the mummy emerged from. The alley hooks right connecting with another alley with a large space used to hold the dumpsters of the various business that all share the block and allowing the garbage truck to come in and turn around and leave. Hidden in a blind spot next to a dumpster a woman stands, back towards marshal, standing in a puddle of ichor. Marshal draws his gun and asks if the woman is all right, placing his hand gently on her shoulder. The floor in front of her and part of the wall suddenly becomes showered with a torrent of the brakish yellow sludge. Rising into form and breaking free, another mummy, looking exactly like the one just killed, steps around the woman and begins to move towards Marshal. Gun already drawn, he unloads a single Dragon fire round into the chest of the mummy, stepping back as it collapses. As the mummy dissolves again, he hears the back door of a nearby business slam open. Peering around the corner sees a man in a business suit running while being followed by a large woman holding a large half sword and carrying a child in her other arm. Leaning back against the wall he waits for them to pass as the head his way.
Mason/Dani/Tesla race down the alley, as they round the corner concealing both Marshal and the woman by the dumpster, mason turns after jumping the puddle that was once the mummy and motions for marshal to follow along in their mad sprint. Dani seeing marshal and dismissing him as a person determines that the woman isn’t worth keeping alive as she has seen what people in similar states are capable of producing. Swinging her blade in an attempt to behead the woman, it catches against the wall and sails just above the woman. Marshal seeing all of this determines that Dani is in fact a creature that has kidnapped Tesla and is chasing Mason in an attempt to kill him. He moves to shoulder check Dani in an attempt to free Tesla. Dani sees this coming and sticks out her sword arm to clothesline Marshal (the spinning maneuver elicits a yell from Tesla announcing she’s going to throw up) however he overpowers her enough that she is knocked off balance and hits the wall she nicked earlier. Tesla gets a light bonk on the head crying out that it hurts a lot and this sucks. As Marshal raises his gun to place in front of Dani’s face and demand Tesla be released Mason shouts something that convinces Marshal that they’ve met before distracting him briefly he begins to turn towards Mason instead as Dani gets her revenge by slapping marshal upside the head with the flat of her blade. Staggering and now completely unfocused he begins to talk out loud as if to someone else only he can hear, which puzzles the group and mason wonders how hard Dani actually hit the poor guy. Under the impression that Marshal may have met Mason before and now realizing that no one here is actually a creature or kidnapper, marshal regains his wits in time for the group to hear the now familiar splattering noise as another mummy rises up next to them. In the distance, from the direction of the store mason/tesla/dani left, there’s sound of a door slamming open. This is enough for Mason to get worked up again and he turns and runs down and out the alley that Marshal had walked down initially. Marshal, curious as to whats coming now, sticks his head around the corner and sees three massive grotesque wolves (two of which seem to have soap or some sort of powder on their fur along with bits of wood) running towards him along with a tall evil clown wielding a large hammer sprinting a few feet behind. Marshal decides running is a good idea, and turns running around the now completed mummy he joins the rest of the group keep up alongside Dani on the side she’s holding Tesla who is still turned face sticking back. Tesla waves to him as she bounces up and down in Dani’s care. With one hand she holds a mock revolver squirt gun, several tubes and wires duct taped along the side trail back to a harness on the childs back full of all sorts of vats of liquid sloshing around held in place with more duct tape, rope, and..gum? Her other hand reaches down to her chest as she cranks a large dial taken from a childs toy and squeezes the trigger. Gasoline shoots out behind them as they near the end of the alley. She waves the gun back and forth spreading it across the width of the alleyway behind them in a widening zigzag pattern as the continue to flee. Tesla asks if Marshal has a match. Marshal nods and runs back to the start of the gasoline trail and sets if off with flint and steel taken from his duster pocket. Turning the group bursts forth from the mouth of the alley as smoke quickly rises behind them and their exit becomes a small inferno.
Cynthia, having just dispatched her evil clown, comes to a T junction. As she stands at the corner, she looks right seeing a quickly rising plume of smoke, to her left the street continues towards the hospital. About to turn she hears a noise coming from the right again and looks over to see a group burst from the alley the smoke is coming from. They continue to run full speed up the street and will pass before her, on the other side, clearly heading toward the hospital. She takes a moment to observe the group and quickly dismisses the man in the business suit leading the group and the cowboy trailing slightly behind. He gaze focuses on the tall woman in the middle. A large half broadsword drawn and held to the side, she clutches a child in her other arm and runs with the look of battle fury on her face. Clearly a warrior amazon and worthy of recruitment for Ragnarok! She wouldn’t be surprised if this woman had incited a warriors blood lust and in the other two and is leading them into battle. Drawing her own sword Cynthia weaves between the cars as she races across the street in a diagonal path meeting the group as the run past. A cry to the Norse gods leaves her lips as she sprints along. The group, in a blind run towards the hospital, does little to discourage this new member as she doesn’t seem to threaten them and considering they just added a cowboy just minutes ago, any help is good. Grinning fiercely at her good fortune she glances over at Dani who merely nods to her and mutters “cool sword”.
Friedrich wakes up in his lab. He must have dozed off for a moment. To his right the door to the room opens and his father walks in. Coming to stand next to his son, he greets him and begins to work on mixing and distilling various chemicals. As Friedrich watches, he has a feeling that something isn’t quite right. He’s not sure what though and his father interrupts his thoughts asking for him to grab a beaker from the other side of the room. As Friedrich grabs the beaker and turns to bring it back, the jars his father is mixing explodes knocking Friedrich back against the wall he slides down his body broken and sagging he begins to lose consciousness. As he slumps to the floor, what remains of his father stumbles towards him. Parts are just gone, and all he can do is watch in horror as what remains burns and melts away, falling forward and splattering against the ground. The look of pain in his fathers eyes is the last thing on his mind as he looses consciousness.
The scene ends as it did before. Friedrich continues in a constant cycle of waking up and bearing witness to his fathers death. Each time the scene becomes slightly darker and more terrifying. His father begins to berate him in his final fiery moments asking why he couldn’t save him. Finally, after many repeats of the nightmare, Friedrich realizes what his father is doing wrong with the chemicals and stops him from mixing his death. Suddenly he’s only 5 again, his father looking down proudly at his son who just saved his life. His father praises him as a future chemist in the making and the emotions that flit across the young Friedrichs face are complex. His father has been dead a long time and this moment was both emotional scarring and rewarding in almost equal measure. It’s in that moment he realizes that this is in fact a nightmare. He shouldn’t be in a lab he should be in a hospital in quite a bit of pain after being tossed around by a xenomorph. This epiphany shatters the world around him and he finds himself in near darkness, hardened ichor falls off his body in chunks. Looking around he finds himself in a forest of ichor statues. Each containing a person underneath the layers of solid gunk. What little light there is, coming from somewhere in the center of bodies, illuminates the ground enough to step around the nearby forms. He notices that a vein of ichor leading up to where he stood has shriveled to almost nothing. Following the remains takes him to a large root-like vein that snakes across packed desert sand the crunches slightly under his feet. Following this Friedrich finds himself at the base of a dais, the source of light is clearly visible now and is a beam up light shooting straight up from the dais center. Looking up he can see that a thick network of the veins stretches overhead completely encasing himself and everyone there in a dome. The sky beyond is slightly visible through the dome and it looks out upon a black starless night. Eyes dropping back down, he finds his gaze returned by a figure perched upon a throne that nearly defies description. And as chapter 2 ends, Friedrich stares at The Old Man on the Throne of Screams.
